Foam E-Z's fuNKy FieldTrip To Future Fins!!!

Last week we got a chance to visit 
and tour the Future Fin Factory/Warehouse.  Luckily for us their facility is only two miles from our shop so we get a chance 
to stop by often.  This time when we showed up we caught Vince Longo (owner) in his office working on some top secret stuff.  
Vince and his wife just had twins so needless to say he has been extremely busy for the last few months.  

After saying hello and a few words of catch up we headed over to the customer service department where Jacob Dildine greeted us.  Jacob, our tour guide, has been with the company for five years and has been moving up through the ranks.  


After saying hi to all the peeps in customer service we headed back to the warehouse.  I'm always blown away at the number of fins and fin boxes they have in stock, but then again they are a fin system company!  The sheer numbers are staggering as they have all their Thermotech fins on one side and all their Premium fins on the other.  There's a big rack holding the white and black fin boxes, the new totally bitchen brightly colored fin boxes, screws, fin keys, etc...  Complete fin system heaven!!!  All these items surround their shipping area where the guys are always busy packing stuff for their US and international customers.  


Future Fins also have a large manufacturing section where they build fins and boxes!  
They have these super high tech CNC machines to cut and foil fins and have a special screen printing machine to apply logos on their fins.  Within their warehouse they have a killer machine shop where they are constantly working on new projects, testing and improving their current systems, and just plain tinkering trying to come up with the next big thing in fins.



It's pretty cool this locally owned company has grown to be one of the big powerhouses in the fin world.  Some of the most popular and successful surfers in the world ride Future Fins.  This is a great testament to the time and effort these guys have spent perfecting their brand.  

We really appreciate them giving us the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see how this operation runs.  Great job guys, keep up the amazing work and continue to push this stuff forward.  Congrats on the twins Vince...

Foam E-Z fuNKy FieldTrip To Stamps Surfboards

I recently took a little skateboard trip down the street to visit Tim Stamps of “Surfboards by Stamps” fame.  When I rolled into his shop, he was glued to his lap top computer getting ready to watch Brett Simpson surf his heat in

the Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle Australia.  Knowing Tim needed some support,  I pulled up a seat next to him and watched as Brett unfortunately didn’t get the waves needed to move through his third round heat.  

That’s the life and relationship of a pro surfer and a shaper to top ASP surfers.   Tim has been making boards for Simpo for the past few years.  After the heat was over, and a quick “F” bomb, it was back to work in the shaping bay.  Stamps had some deadlines to fill before he left for the Gold Coast of Australia.  He headed down under to support his other big named ASP surfer Courtney Conlogue as she surfs in the Quiksilver Pro.

As I entered Tim’s shape room we chatted about some of the tools and the nuances of the different abrasive grits he uses.   Tim has been integral in helping us develop our line of shaping tools.  He comes to us with ideas and I go to him for feedback and testing before we launch and tools.  This way we know that what we sell works and we can stand behind it.

Stamps’ boards are made completely in house from the shaping to the glassing.  He employs some of the best guys in the industry to do his glass jobs and uses only the best materials.  By having it all under one roof, this insures that Tim’s boards are exactly to spec before leaving his shop.  Quality control  at its best!  Tim is a true craftsman, having learned his trade from one of the best shapers around - Rich Harbour.

Foam E-Z fuNky FieldTrip to Harbour Surfboards

This is the first installment in our Foam E-Z fuNky FieldTrips!  Last week we stopped in at Harbour Surfboards and visited with Rich Harbour, his shop has been in the same location since 1959!!!  This is an extremely unique surfshop by today’s standards in that there is a shaperoom on the premises that Rich doddles in on a daily basis.  

On this day we were lucky enough to stumble in on Rich putting on a nose block.  This is an arduous task to get it right but Rich has put a few on in his fifty some odd years of shaping.   Since he makes his noseblocks from scratch, he first has to acquire the nose block material (walnut, balsawood, red cedar).  The next step is to re-saw the wood to the appropriate thicknesses, then glue up the wood strips in the order desired, plane the block to square it up, miter cut the block at the appropriate angle and finally glue it together (ideally in a jig).  After all that work, the noseblock is finally ready to be installed on the board.  Now the trick is to cut the mostly shaped blank perfect so that the noseblock fits tight with no gaps.  He grabs some five-minute epoxy and glues the noseblock to the blank using tape to secure it.  He flips the board over a number of times making adjustments to be sure block is placed appropriately.  Once the glue dries Rich busts out one of his razor sharp hand planes and chips away at the nose block until it’s roughed to the final shape.  After sanding with a couple of grits of sandpaper the block is finished. 

It was great to catch up with this artisan craftsman in the midst of such a cool project.  I’ve seen him do this a number of times over the years but now that I’m older and more mature I just now realized the time and tlc Rich puts into each of these nice add-ons. Thanks Rich, it's always great to catch up with you.  I forgot to add that Rich is now taking up mixology on the side, creating his own Lemoncello drinks!!!

Me and the Foam E-Z Crew

Foam E-Z was founded by Brad Nadell with the focus of supplying local shapers with board building materials. Over 20 years Foam E-Z has evolved and now supplies home builders worldwide via their eCommerce website. They have played an important role in Southern California’s board building culture and proudly bear the moniker of “The Original One-Stop Surfboard Supply Shop”. We sat down with Brad to hear about Foam E-Z history.

US Blanks: How did you get started in the business?

Brad Nadell: I grew up in Seal Beach in the early 80’s. We surfed Southside a lot and then we’d all hang out at Harbour Surfboards, guys like Tim Stamps, Chas Wickwire, Marty Thomas, Chad Wells, Dave Sauers, Ryan Simmons, Mike Morgan, Chris Sardelis, just to name a few, I could go on. So growing up around Harbour Surfboards I got to see the process of building a board from blanks being delivered by Clark Foam to Rich shaping them to the boards being laminated. So I started sweeping up around the shop, just to be around the scene. Then eventually I started “air-spraying” boards, that’s kind of where I made my niche at Harbour. I painted boards for 8 years until I was in

my 20’s.

US Blanks: How did you transition from Harbour to Foam E-Z?

Brad: My good friend Steve Adler, may he rest in peace, presented me with an idea to supply the local shapers with blanks. At the time he had The Surfboard Factory which was super popular. This area of Westminster was a real hotbed for shaping. Guys like Mark Pesce, Chas, A-39, Poi Dog, there was a lot of big up and coming shapers around here. As a matter of fact, they were all shaping out of The Surfboard Factory, so we started supplying them all with blanks. Steve’s business was growing and he was busy with his glass shop so I ended up buying him out of the business. Since then Foam E-Z has evolved quite a bit. It used to be just focused on supplying commercial shapers, but there has been an increasing trend of home builders and so we’ve focused a lot of our efforts of education and supplying them with all the materials they need.

US Blanks: Seems like a logical transition. There was a need in the market and you’ve been able to adapt and fill that need. How do you define Foam E-Z today?

Brad: Foam E-Z today has grown a lot. We’re a worldwide supplier of foam, cloth, tools, basically everything you need to build a board. Obviously the DIY (Do It Yourself) builder, the home builder, has grown. More people care about how there board is made or want to learn about construction so we’re really happy to provide education and help people along with the process. And we recently built a shape room that people can rent out, which is fully stocked with tools. We have very good instructors. It’s been fun to see all the people who are interested in board building. We have Father and Sons coming in to build boards together. We can make personalized lams. We get the board glassed for you. We provide ding repair, shipping, pretty much everything. We still supply the industry as well, but that’s not our sole focus any longer.

US Blanks: Why do you use US Blanks?

Brad: Well, I chose US Blanks right when they started. I had relationships established with the the key people, whom previously worked at Clark Foam so I kind of put all my trust in them and had faith that they would be able to translate the superior quality of Clark into their new brand. And so far they've really nailed it. Their efficiently is key. The quality is great. They stand behind their product. I've always asked for feedback from shapers and customers and I always get positive feedback. They just provide me everything I need to be successful selling surfboard blanks. And the fact that they are made here in the USA is a huge slam dunk for us. That’s important to us. And lastly, they just do what they say, which is really important. I trust them and if I’m on a deadline, they always come through.

Happy New Year, It's Our 20th Year In Business!

Another year has passed and another year has arrived!  We had a great 2012 and we are looking forward to an even better year in 2013.  This is going to be a momentous year at Foam E-Z as we will be celebrating our twentieth year in business this coming May!  Stay tuned as we are lining up quite an anniversary party.  Not only will we be having a party full of good times but we will also be offering discounts throughout our anniversary year.  BYOB = Build Your Own Board! We have launched several new things we this past year.   First and foremost,  is our amazing revamped website.  We have also added some services such as logo/laminate printing, awesome ding repair, full service glass jobs, and of course our highly successful Shape Lessons.  Since we have had such a great response, we are planning to add more days to our Shape Lesson Calendar.  Of course we have some more things up our sleeve but will not be announcing them until the time is right.   Shape It! We stopped by Foam E-Z recently to catch up with owner Brad Nadell. While Brad gave us the tour, we were able to ask him a few questions…

Where did your love for surf come from?  

I started surfing in 1978 when I visited my Dad who lived in Seal Beach.  It just looked so cool and I always had loved the ocean.  Once I tried it I was hooked!

What is your earliest surf memory?  

I remember very clearly the view from looking over the edge of a wave.  I would paddle in and look over that edge until I finally got up the gumption to push myself over and drop in!

Please explain the inception of Foam E-Z and how you first got involved in the industry?  

I first got involved in the surf industry by hanging out at Harbour Surfboards (Seal Beach).  Eventually I started learning the trade and Rich (Harbour) taught me a few things.  Foam E-Z’s inception actually came from Steve Adler, my original business partner who after 6 months I bought out.

What are some of your favorite moments in your career?  

First was actually going down and getting my DBA at the County court in 1993.  It sounds weird but when Clark Foam closed in Dec 1995, it just changed everything and really tested my creative juices.  Of course all the moments I get to have with our incredible customers from the professional shapers to the first timers.

What do you think is the future of your industry?

Well that’s a tough question…  my actual industry of selling board building supplies is getting more and more competitive with the web becoming bigger and bigger.  It makes me nervous with these bigger businesses that are distributors jumping into the game and trying to drive prices down.  We just keep doing what we do best and that is to have the best products at the best prices and most importantly the best customer service available!!!

Any exciting projects coming up?

We are working on quite a few projects at this time but I’d like to keep them under the radar!  I can tell you that we are planning quite a few things for our upcoming TWENTIETH YEAR Anniversary.

What are your 5 surf essentials?

Board, wetsuit or trunks, nice conditions, clean water, and low crowds

Do you have any heroes and/or mentors?

Yeah for sure… Rich Harbour has taught me the most about board building, Robert Howson (Retail owner at Harbour surfboards) for his retail business advice, my Dad for steering me in the right direction as much as I tried to stray, and for sure my wife Becky for supporting me and always being there for me to bounce stuff off of.

After receiving the lay of the land, we stepped outside to check out their awesome shaping box. Shaping lessons are conducted at Foam E-Z and the use of the shaping box is also available for rent. So cool!!!

Brad then helped us pick out the perfect blank and all our shaping tools and materials, for our next project – Shaping our own board…. Stay tuned for results.

FIN BUSH, Test Ride Center!

Hey FINatics!

How many times have you looked at another surfers board and thought that it looked so fun and you'd love to try it out? Do you surf: Hell yeah, I started when I was around ten. I grew up surfing with all the boys. You (Brad), Chad Wells, Ryan Simmons, Rob Colby, Tim Stamps, Benny Bigler and all kinds of other great surfers. Surfing's consumed my whole life for around 30 years now. Always has, always will.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo: Like 13 or 14, a friend of mine did it on me at school with india ink a sewing needle and some thread. It was real small, but my mom was pissed!

Outlook on life: (In a nutshell) Be a giver. Treat people how you want to be treated. Keep it real, be positive and respectful and you should receive the same in return. Appreciate the things you have, don't trip on what you don't have. Have as much healthy fun as possible, life is short. Don't hate, congratulate. Love yourself, believe in yourself, be true to yourself and always stand up for yourself. 

Who's been instrumental in your success as a photographer: Without a doubt, Joe Foster has showed me so much love and has really been a great mentor to me. The 2012 Boardroom Surfboard Show, MR Rocks!!!

We had an awesome time this past weekend at The Boardroom Show in Del Mar.  So much to see, so many cool people, lot's of story, and MR.  That guy was my idol when I was a kid and I can't believe how cool of a dude he is in real life.   He was so involved this past weekend in all aspects of the show.  I swear he spent at least one hour watching each Icon Shaper try to recreate that board he constructed back in 1981.  This was no simple task, as the board had some serious bottom contours and the deck/rails were nothing to sneeze at.  Since this was the first time I got an opportunity to watch so much of this shape off I was amazed at the struggle these craftsmen were up against.  The lighting sucks for shaping a board, the fish bowl effect can't be fun, the unfamiliar surroundings add to the difficulty, and trying to replicate that board in an hour and a half is almost impossible.  Everyone of those guys (Taz, Reno, Pyzel, Rawson, Wayne Rich, and Ricky Carrol) was so impressive!!!

Starting the shaping day off on Saturday was Taz a 15 year old kid from the Canary Islands.  This young shaper is self taught by watching YouTube videos.  He told me that he watched our video of Stamps shaping in The E-Z Shape Box hundreds of times.  It showed as that boy can really throw the Accurate Planer around like he's been doing it for twenty years.  Even though Taz didn't win the Icons of Shaping he impressed all with his incredible skills and likable personality.

Ricky Carroll won the  Icons of Foam Shape Off for the third time!!!  Carroll also won the event in 2007 and 2008.  Four-time world champion MR spoke eloquently about all six shapers and singled-out  Reno Abellira as a shaper/surfer who influenced his career both competitively and as a surfboard builder. "Reno showed up at the Surfabout in 1974 with a quiver of six surfboards. This was a time when we traveled to surf contests with with one board. Reno had a twin-fin Fish, similar to what Steve Lis was making. He (Abellira) was blowing us away with how fast he flew around  on the waves as the rest of us labored on heavy single fins. It changed my way of thinking."

Another highlight for us was our involvement in the Q&A Shaping Bay.  We had our Shaping Instructor Chris Carrozza spend 45 minutes with a lucky spectator from the grandstands.  Chris walked Ian Cameron and the rest of the audience through the finish steps of shaping a board.  On top of it all Ian got to walk away with the finished blank!  Not bad for FREE!  Check out the video of the lesson in the Q&A Shaping Bay.

Overall the show was a huge success for all involved.  We couldn't have done it without our incredible staff; Johnny, Tiernan, and Cody.  Thanks also goes out to US Blanks for toting our gear around year after year.  We also want to make a huge shout out for all the support from our customers, it's why we show up each day.

QUIVER TEE, A Petticoat For The Right Brained Wave Rats!

We've been watching this Garage Brand grow in it's popularity of the past couple of years as more and more tee shirt designs trickle out to the crew.  Once "Quiver" made it out to the airways we figured it fits in with what we do superbly!  You can now find the Quiver Tee on our Foam E-Z site and on our shelves in the shop.  

This cool design with all your favorite surfboard tail shapes and fin set ups including a sidewalk surf mobile! Surfboards are by far one of the finest sculptures any artist has ever sculpted. They're functional (depending on the rider) and beautiful to look at. Original Art by Local Artist.  The tees look killer and are made with those nice soft slim fitted tees.

There is one thing consistent in our life, change.  Long board/short board, fast/slow, bright /mundane, big/small, hot/cold, loud/quiet, 1 fin, 2 fins, 3 fins, 4 fins, 5?!  We always have something new in front of us, and something, somewhere exciting to explore. Delve reflects change (other than our logo, our involvement in surf culture and our drive to create). Season-to-season, Delve shirts are unrecognizable from each other.

Delve was born out of the goal to do what we love. It came out of the garage and it’s in the garage that the best work still happens. There is something to be said about humble beginnings, and in our case a humble present.

We are Right Brained Wave Rats (R.B.W.R.). We thrive in the creative and love the waves. We find inspiration in every facet of our lives. Delve has many faces, many expressions.  The shirt, Quiver represents those options and overall gives our passion a visual look into what is Delve – it says, "let's have fun and get to business". 

Shapers Are Crafty!

We found this video by customer Gene Cooper of Cooperfish Surfboards working his but off to chamber some thick redwood stringers.  People take it for granted how much work goes into surfboard building but after watching this video you see that these guys can go crazy. Most are trying to set themselves apart from other shapers while creating unique and functional surfcrafts.  Be sure to pay close attention to all the different jigs and tools Gene uses when hollowing out this stringer.  It is a precise art that these craftsmen engage in and they do it with pride.

OUR OPEN ROAD, An art adventure into the great unknown!

Foam E-Z customer, artist, world traveler, surfer, and adventurer Adam Harteau and his family are heading out on a year long expedition through Central and South America. Their ultimate goal is the southern most tip of the continent, encompassing 23,000 miles and visiting more than twenty countries. They'll be traveling in their VW Westfalia that is currently getting retro-fitted by GoWesty in Los Osos California. This adventure is a chance to experience "life on the road" as a family of three. They will be documenting their travels as they go via video and blog. Ultimately this trip will be the inspiration for Adam's next body of work to be exhibited upon his arrival home.

We are stoked to be donating the board building supplies for Adam to build two boards from start to finish. These surfboards will be will be one of kind art pieces meant to be ridden throughout their travels.
