What A Great Time! Thanks To Everyone!!!

I want to send a HUGE thanks to all who attended our party this past Saturday. We hope you had an awesome time I know I did!  Here is a quick recap...

Larry Bertlemann, that's right THE Rubber Man, was there and chatting it up with everyone.  What a great personality and very approachable he is.  Drew Brophy was his usual spectacular self, bringing pen art to life right before the party goers eyes.  Drew was kind enough to leave his pens out for the kids to thrash and paint the mini blanks US Blanks brought.  Balestar, Stamps, and Doc in the Futures Fish Bowl Shaping Bay was an awesome site to see.  Those guys were really tested as the lighting sucked, it was about 100 degrees inside, no air hose, and hundreds of people starring in from point blank range.  It was awesome to have Chad "The Lad" Wells (Quiksilver Team Manager) as our MC, he knows how to really fire up a crowd. 














We gave out so much free stuff thanks to all the vendor donations.  Thank you to the beautiful Ivie, who came in from Utah just to work the raffle booth.  Foam E-Z is donating $500 bucks to Surfrider Foundation from the money generated at the party.  The Jimbonaires were sending out killer music vibes throughout the event.  Food, thank to Chef Larry Meyers was on point, although I never got a chance to eat... 

What a surprise to be awarded that unbelievable hand-built Seventies Gun by the Crew at Foam E-Z.  You really didn't have to do but I love it!  

Thanks to the vendors and participants;  Drew and Maria Brophy = incredible art on the Aipa board... Stamps, Balestar, and Doc for donating their time and sweat to shape out those boards for the lucky winners, Matt Barker at Hurley for donating those awesome tees, Future Fins for the Fish Bowl and bitchen fin sets, US Blanks and Marko for the raffle blanks, Ryan Bryant at Delve for doing the bitchen four color screen printed tees, FCS for the incredible raffle package, Solspot for the beer, Resin Research and Revchem for the board building supplies for the raffle, Harbour Surfboards for the raffle stuff, Val and Duke Aipa for the board that Drew painted, Larry Bertlemann for the signed wax, and so on.  I really apologize if I missed someone and I'm sure I did. 

I want thank the Foam E-Z Crew for all that they did to help prepare for this and help make the day amazing.  Thanks to my beautiful wife and family for putting up with me over the last month and I was stressing miserably about this event.

Itinerary And Updates For Our Party This Saturday!

Only two days to go until our 20 Year Anniversary Extravaganza!!!  It's going to be a day for of festivities, food, music, and fun!  The party will take place in the parking lot behind Foam E-Z from 10-3pm.

The day will start off with Tom Balestar shaping a bitchen 5'10" Retro Single Fin, similar to an Eighties Stussy.  When he's done shaping we will raffle the board off.  Next in the Future Fins Fish Bowl Shaping Bay is Tim Stamps.  Tim will be hand shaping a Stamps 5'8" fX Quad/5 Fin to be be raffled off when it is completed.  At noon, a ticket will be drawn and the winner will be creating his/hers custom board with Doc of Surf Prescriptions.  Here's what Doc had to say about what he'll be doing:  "Saturday June 1st we will be at Foam EZ in Westminster CA. to help Brad and his crew celebrate their 20th anniversary . Now who needs a Surf Prescription?   Some lucky individual will win a custom Surf RX this Saturday June 1st at 12 noon.  Winner needs to be present because you will be immediately sitting down with me and we will design your board in my Surf CAD system at  the Surf RX tent. Next I will head off to my Factory and cut your board on my shaping machine ( you can come with me if you'd like) after which I will be returning to the "Fish Bowl' shape room at the event and hand shape your cut blank. Your custom shape will then be glassed at my factory  Surf Prescriptions  in H.B. where you will be picking up your  custom Surf RX on its completion  Good luck  See you Saturday at the event.  PEACE OUT DOC".

In addition to all the shaping going on, Drew Brophy will spend the day doing pen art on party goers surfboards.  If you have never seen Drew in action I highly recommend checking this out.  He is world renown for his art work and his pen art surfboards.  Another cool exhibit will be live screen printing with a four color process.  Ryan Bryant of Delve will be screen printing your tees to order.  If that's not enough, there will be live music by the Jimbonaires - Cameron Vogel on drums, free burgers, hot dogs, Pop Chips, Vitamin Water, raffles every hour, lot's of freebies, and 10% Off everything in the shop.

Stamps Shaping His fX Model To Be Raffled Off At Our Party!!!

Tim Stamps will be shaping his new fX model in the Future Fins Fish Bowl Shaping Bay.  This will give party goers the opportunity to watch a “pro” shaper do his thing and one lucky customer will win the board!  That’s right if you are lucky enough to win this raffle you will win your own custom StampsfX 5 Fin Convertible Surfboard.  The board will be raffled off after Tim shapes it, around 1:30pm.  

Here are the details on the fX model according to Stamps:

“The fX originates from my ever popular Quantum Fish design. This design has been blended with more ‘performance’ characteristics such as a more refined foil, enhanced bottom contours, and a slight rocker adjustments. A smaller wave board with limitless speed and unprecedented maneuverability. Ride approximately 4” – 6” shorter than your height.  The board is ideal for ankle to chest high surf.”

A little history on Tim Stamps:

Tim Stamps has been building surfboards since the age of 15, and is known for the progressive and innovative boards he creates for some of the most accomplished pro surfers out there, novices just figuring out what boards work best under their feet, and everyone in between.

In The Shaping Bay

It was his surroundings and upbringing that fostered his lifelong passion of surfboard building, and as a kid it didn’t take long to realize he had the shaping bug in his DNA. His desire to help, learn, create, build and dissect surfing into physics, geometrics, hydrodynamics and displacement theory began with two mentors. The first was his father Johnny Stamps and the second Rich Harbour.  Tim was under the tutelage of Harbour from the years 1985 through 1997 when Tim decided it was time to venture out on his own.  The rest is history as they say.

Stamps has been shaping a lot of boards for pros on the tour as of late.  He has been working closely with surfer’s Brett Simpson, Travis Logie, and Courtney Conlogue.  Keep your eyes out at the party as there is a high probability that one of these famous surfers will be attending.

Thanks to Future Fins for donating their “Fish Bowl” shape room, this will provide the opportunity for all guests to watch shapers at work.  Throughout the day Pro Shapers Tim Stamps and Jeff “Doc” Lausch (Surf Prescriptions) will shape boards in the “Fish Bowl” and those shaped blanks will be raffled off to lucky guests!  Drew Brophy will be joining us to do live art demos and paint customer boards. 

Live music, free food, and a bounce house will add to the ambience.  There will be free swag and raffles every hour thanks to donations by companies like: Future Fins, FCS, US Blanks, Revchem, Graphite Master, Hurley, and much more.  

During the month of May we’ll be giving away a FREE Shape Lesson on our Facebook page that will be carried out during the party!  Shapers and vendors will have tents set up for the crowd as well.   

Last but not least, we will be having a 10% OFF everything in the store sale.

Foam E-Z fuNKy FieldTrip To Stamps Surfboards

I recently took a little skateboard trip down the street to visit Tim Stamps of “Surfboards by Stamps” fame.  When I rolled into his shop, he was glued to his lap top computer getting ready to watch Brett Simpson surf his heat in

the Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle Australia.  Knowing Tim needed some support,  I pulled up a seat next to him and watched as Brett unfortunately didn’t get the waves needed to move through his third round heat.  

That’s the life and relationship of a pro surfer and a shaper to top ASP surfers.   Tim has been making boards for Simpo for the past few years.  After the heat was over, and a quick “F” bomb, it was back to work in the shaping bay.  Stamps had some deadlines to fill before he left for the Gold Coast of Australia.  He headed down under to support his other big named ASP surfer Courtney Conlogue as she surfs in the Quiksilver Pro.

As I entered Tim’s shape room we chatted about some of the tools and the nuances of the different abrasive grits he uses.   Tim has been integral in helping us develop our line of shaping tools.  He comes to us with ideas and I go to him for feedback and testing before we launch and tools.  This way we know that what we sell works and we can stand behind it.

Stamps’ boards are made completely in house from the shaping to the glassing.  He employs some of the best guys in the industry to do his glass jobs and uses only the best materials.  By having it all under one roof, this insures that Tim’s boards are exactly to spec before leaving his shop.  Quality control  at its best!  Tim is a true craftsman, having learned his trade from one of the best shapers around - Rich Harbour.

The Sound of Dust, Short Film About Tim Stamps!

Hey Cyber friends, we have a treat for you today! Our long time friend and customer Tim Stamps of Stamps Surfboards has a new short film, "The Sound Of Dust".  This cute short film gives us all a little insight into what it takes to be a professional shaper in this industry, as well as his love and dedication to his craft. The guys over at Hidden Notice did a great job creating this vid and keeping it real, honest, and personal. Check it out and show Stamps some well deserved love!

Are You a Super Shredder?

I only have one questions for you, "Are you a super shredder?" Masayoshi Takanaka is, and here's the video to prove it. We here at Foam E-Z like fun, interesting, weird, and progressive surfboards. I'm not sure how this board will surf with a big hole in the middle of it, but it's pretty rad to see the craftsmanship that went into this instrument of the ocean and stage. I personally prefer less nose rocker, but then again, I can't wail out a tune on my surfboard like Masayoshi can. Enjoy!

Pottz Is In The House!!!

Martin "Pottz" Potter was recently in town to pick up his new board from Tim Stamps, that's right, Tim made Pottz a killer new stick. They met a few months back while Stamps was visiting/shaping on the Gold Coast of Aus. I asked Tim how the whole thing transpired and here's what he said: "I talked Pottz into ordering a board after spending the day watching the Snapper Rocks contest and putting down a few coldies."



Potter was passing through on his way to Peru for the ISA Worlds Junior Champs. I just talked to Pottz and he told me that this event is the event that has spawned some of our top talent on the WQS, names like Owen Wright, Jordy Smith, Steff Gilmore, and many more. This event is for kids under 16 and involves 26 to 28 different countries around the world. Pottz has been working for Quiksilver since 2000, helping to develop their youth team riders. He also announces at various Quiksilver events around the world. David Scales' from 1HOURINHB was lucky enough to hook up with Martin Potter too. David shot the below video as Pottz worked with a couple groms giving them Pro advice before they head down to Peru. Mar Ohno of Japan also came by to lend his WQS experience.



Here's a little history on Martin Potter:

Potter began surfing in Durban, South Africa, at age 10. By 15, he took the world by storm, defeating Shaun Tomson to win his first professional contest and finishing second in his first two IPS events. The following winter at the Pipe Masters, he outlasted the meanest tube of the winter, a 12-foot screamer that delivered him into stardom.

Through the '80s, he was a card-carrying member of the Big Four, along with Tom Curren, Tom Carroll and Mark Occhilupo. His fluid, powerful, radical style -- an unheard combination -- made him one of the most admired surfers anywhere, rippling several generations after. He also helped pioneer aerials, although his were fluid extensions of powerful off-the-tops rather than the forecast hip-hop tricks of today. A teenaged Kelly Slater even patterned his style after Potter's, plastering his walls with shots of Potter putting his trademark green-and-yellow explosion boards through their paces.

Delve Fest This Saturday April 23rd!

Who likes FREE stuff? We like free stuff! We are going to be hanging out at the coolest food drive ever this Saturday, April 23rd at the Canvas Shop, 720 Marina Dr. in Seal Beach, sponsored by Delve clothing. All you have to do is show up at 7 p.m., bring 1, yes one, uno, can of food and you’re in! There is going to be live music, art, a showing of Stoked and Broke on a big screen, free Beer and Burgers...yipee.

After we fill our bellies we’re going to be doing a glassing demo on a 5’10” Fuse model surfboard with Tim Stamps of Stamps Surfboards and selling raffle tickets for said shred stick. Tickets for the surfboard raffle are only $10 and we’ll be drawing the winner at the party so you gotta be present to win. Don’t worry we’re not going to give you a half finished board, we’ll finish it and the winner can pick it up from the shop. Hope to see you all there.

Orange Foam Sample Get's Glassed, The Update!

Here is the video sequel to Stamps shaping the US Blanks Orange Foam sample. It's just a short little diddy but choked full of information about the glassing of the blank. This 5-8 Thruster is 2-3/8" thick, has Future Fins boxes, and with a single 4oz deck with a 3/4 4oz deck patch and single 4oz bottom glassing schedule had a finish weight of 5.5lbs! We should have the Orange Foam in stock by middle February. Soon to come, the final video in this series "How the Orange Foam surfs and holds up".

Tim Stamps Test Shapes an Orange Foam US Blank!

Hope everyone had a great X-mas holiday weekend and are now ready to get back down to some serious business of building boards.

About two weeks ago the brass over at US Blanks threw us (Foam E-Z) a sample Orange Foam surfboard blank to shape out. This NEW surfboard foam is 6% lighter or 1/2 pound compared to their Red Foam formula. We thought we would enlist pro shaper Tim Stamps as test pilot since he is a stickler when it comes to his foam. We knew we could get an unbiased, honest opinion from Stamps whether it was good or bad. We interviewed Tim at the end of this video for his take on this new foam. We were pleasantly surprised by US Blanks latest creation so look for the Orange Foam at Foam E-Z in 2011.

Beach Demo Was a Blast!

Wow the Beach Demo was a blast this past Saturday even though the surf was a meager 1ft!!! Luckily the skies were clear and the air was a brisk 4o degrees to start the morning. Tim Stamps brought down twenty surfboards all shapes and sizes for the kiddies to try out. There were longboards, contemporary shortboards, quad fish, and even some experimental stuff. Future Fins showed up with more fins than you'd see in a fish tank. They had their new killer stuff including the Elevon Quads which some people were lucky enough to try out. Adam from Solspot showed up to do his demo and give his forecasting tips but unfortunately we had some serious technical difficulties with our electrical equipment. Since we didn't have electricity David Scales from One Hour in HB got to surf instead of showing his surf movies. Unexpectedly, Chas's Pit Crew (SB and HB hot groms) showed up and got the opportunity to test ride the stuff and give it a real go. Even a few local pros were there to rip the knee high dribblers.

BEACH DEMO HAS BEEN MOVED TO SATURDAY NOV. 27th

Stamps Surfboard and Futures Fins Demo Presented by Foam E-Z

We’re moving!!...the beach demo to Saturday, November 27th. The demo was originally planned for this Saturday, November 20th but it looks like the weather isn’t going to cooperate with us. We’ve decided to push it back one week to Saturday, November 27th. The weather is looking clear and crisp and we’d rather hang out in the sunshine than tough it out in the rain. This should give everyone enough time to recover from Thanksgiving and a chance to work off a few pounds. Tim Stamps of Stamps Surfboards will be providing all of the boards and Future Fins will be providing all of the fins so you don’t need anything….except a wetsuit. If you want you can even bring your own board down and try out some of the fins too, but why not thrash around on someone else’s board for a while.

Besides the boards and fins we’ll also have some super rad surf videos playing on a flat screen courtesy of 1HRinHB as well as some jams. The guys from SolSpot will be there to show a bitchen demo of how there new site works and some forecasting tips. Of course there’s more, we’ll also be giving away some freebies and have some refreshments so make sure you get there early to get your pick of boards and fins.

Just to re-cap, the demo is still on and it is still on the South Side of the Huntington Beach Pier, we’ve just moved the date to November 27th. So cruise by and check out the latest shapes/designs from Tim Stamps and Futures Fins. See you at the beach!!!

Mark's Benefit Party was a success!!!

So the party went off without a hitch thanks to all the people involved. The raffle absolutely blew up with so much stuff being given away pretty much everyone left with something! Congratulations to the winners of the unbelievable surfboards that were given away. A special thanks goes out to Todd for manning the bbq under the stress of the many hungry guests. We raised over $2500 for Mark which will certainly help with his bills. I am absolutely overwhelmed by all of the love and support I was shown by my friends in the surf community this Sunday at the fundraiser hosted by Foam E-Z, Aloha Glassing, and Shelter Surf. I can't even begin to express my appreciation of all of my friends who pulled together to raise money so that i could continue my recovery. It has proven much more expensive than even my insurance was willing to afford but thanks to the efforts of some really awesome people: Brad Nadell,and the crew of Foam E-Z, Steve Albin, (and Kim Albin for the awesome cupcakes and root-beer floats) and Matt Bettis and the crew of Aloha Glassing, Jack Sykes of Line Up Surfboards , Tim Stamps of Stamps Surfboards, Graham Day of Shelter Surfshop as well as some of the great vendors of surf supplies such as Futures Fins, US Blanks, Quiksilver and local shops like Harbour Surfboards. Thanks again to these great people and many more. We were able to raise enough money to keep me going on my way to a full recovery (HOPEFULLY I DIDN'T FORGET ANYBODY!), so hopefully someday I can get back to my life as I'd like it to be. A huuuge thank you to everyone who turned out to show me all of your love and support, there were so many familiar faces. Friends from the water, friends from the shop, and some new friends I hope to paddle out with someday in the not too distant future. So in conclusion, the fundraiser was a great success.

Benefit Party for Mark Bouvier Behind Our Shop, Nov 14!

On Sunday November 14th from 2-5pm there will be a benefit party for Mark Bouvier. If you don't know or remember Mark he is the former "Saturday Guy" at Foam E-Z. Mark was involved in a horrific auto accident over a year ago. He sustained head trauma that has paralyzed his left side. Mark has been working tirelessly with rehab specialists to gain movement in his arm and leg back. The hard work has paid off and he is starting to see some real gains. The bummer is all this rehab is ringing up a huge bill that his insurance can't pay.

We're hoping to generate a lot of interest in hopes of bringing many people out to contribute to the cause. Many people/businesses are stepping up with generous donations that will be raffled off at the party. Stamps Surfboards, Bettis Surfboards, and Line Up Surfboards have gotten together to donate some beautiful boards that will be going home with some lucky party goers. Future Fins has donated a bunch of goodies for the raffle. There will also be a Hot Dog BBQ, live music, and all around shenanigans going on. Raffle tix (5 for $20) will be pre-sold at Foam E-Z, Aloha Glassing, and Shelter Surf Shop. Of course, tix will also be available at the party.

Steve Adler Passes Away! RIP Friend

Tomorrow Tuesday March 15th we will be opening late (1pm) since we will be attending Steve Adler's Service at the St. Cyprian Church 4714 Clark Ave Long Beach, CA 90808.

Board Builder, Craftsman, Surfer, and all around incredible guy Steve Adler passed away last Thursday March 11, 2010. Steve was a lifelong friend and he had the idea to start Foam E-Z. He presented the concept to me on the way home from an evening mountain bike ride at El Morro. Within a couple of weeks of that bike ride we began Foam E-Z in May of1993. Foam E-Z and I would not be what we are today without Steve's involvement. Adler was an accomplished board builder having built his own brand under The Surfboard Board Factory name. Recently he was working with Tim Stamps helping to develop Stamps SUP line. Steve was incredibly involved in the SUP World and a business partner with Jodie Nelson in the SUP Spot.

He will be dearly missed by everyone who had the chance to meet or spend any time with him. It is hard to believe that he is gone.

Video Footage of RadRob's board getting Glassed

After a couple of weeks of reorganization we all got together to finish RadRob's Quantum Quad that was shaped in the EZ Shaping Box by Tim Stamps . This time Tim invited us down to the Stamps Factory to do the glassing. Tim did the Future Fins installation, glassjob, and sanding while Brad from Foam E-Z did the Hot Coating. We wanted to crank the board out quick so we decided to use UV Resin to get this thing done. The UV Resin worked amazing and we got the board ready to sand within 2-1/2 hours!!! It was so cool, after each step of resin work we'd just walk outside and let it kick for 10-15 minutes and we were ready for the next step. The board came out amazing and light since the resin kicks so fast there isn't much time for the resin to soak in. Rob was stoked to get his new board and has been getting RAD on it ever since! Thanks again to Tim, RadRob and Kiri Kien from Perry's Pizza in Huntington Beach.
